JOHNSON BIBLE COLLEGE July ˇ August ˇ September 2006 is Issue New Dining Facility 2 2006 School eme 5 New Students Arrive 6 Artist Rendering CAMPUS New Dining Facility Providing needed capacity for student services The 2005 October - December issue of the Blue & White announced a new dining facility. A generous commitment from the Donald and Mary Gally Charitable Trust is helping provide the funds for this project. The present cafeteria, occupying the north end of the Phillips-Welshimer Building, has served as the primary dining hall for over 30 years. When it was occupied in 1975, enrollment was 443. Over the years, renovation and reallocation of available space has allowed continued use of this facility. As the student body has expanded tremendously during the past ten years, reaching 922 in 2005, there has been a growing need for a new dining facility that provides increased capacity for both food preparation and seating. Enrollment growth has also stretched the capacity of the College's post office and bookstore. In seeking to be good stewards by maximizing the usefulness of the new building, a new post office and bookstore will be located on the second floor. The projected completion date for this project has been extended to the summer of 2007. Skyrocketing construction costs delayed finalization of the plans as we struggled with providing the functionality needed at a cost that reflected wise management. Anyone involved in construction knows the challenges presented by post-Katrina building materials costs. While The Gally Trust is providing significant funding for this project, it will not cover the entire cost. One question frequently asked is, "How will the space vacated by the current cafeteria be used?" A new preaching center, which has been in the planning for the past few years, will occupy the entire area. Not only does the space vacated by the current cafeteria perfectly meet the requirements for this preaching center, but the central location of the Phillips-Welshimer Building also ideally highlights the importance of preaching at JBC. Building Site Layout View from Eubanks Drive The new dining hall is positioned as close to Bell Drive as possible. In addition to providing convenient access to the post office and bookstore from Bell Drive, this location allows for a generous green space between the Phillips-Welshimer Building and the new dining facility. View from Bell Drive 2 Blue & White Bell Drive 1 First Floor e main floor occupies 22,389 square feet. It seats 406 in the main dining area with the capability of expanding to a total capacity of 640 when the private dining area is included. Comparative seating for the current cafeteria is 215 in the main cafeteria with an expanded capacity of 354. 2 Second Floor e second floor occupies 10,080 square feet. It houses a new bookstore and post office. evirDsknabuE Work site as of September 1st Paul Coleman, alumnus and trustee of e Gally Charitable Trust, gives Dr. Eubanks the first gift for the new dining facility. Blue & White 3 Alive Discipleship Program Begins at JBC Strategic plan initiative launches new discipleship program New students arriving on campus this August found many new things new surroundings, new friends, new classes, and new construction. They also found a new program: ALIVE, a discipleship program focused on changing lives one at a time by forming disciples. This program is being implemented after more than a year of planning, organization, and leadership training. STUDENTS David Legg Dean of Students Bob Paddock meets with student discipleship leaders at the beginning of school. Bob is coordinating the Alive program this year under the direction of campus minister, David Wheeler. One of the real challenges faced in developing a discipleship program for a student body as large as JBC's is finding enough leaders. If leadership was limited to faculty and staff, each "small" group would have 20 or more students, hardly the ideal size for good small-group dynamics or personal interaction. The solution was found in having faculty, staff, and administrators serve as mentors to upper classmen, who would in turn lead the student discipleship groups. Student discipleship leaders were recruited last year and underwent an intensive thirteen week training program. Discussion topics included small group dynamics, community building, spiritual disciplines and spiritual growth, accountability, and servanthood. OneoftheoutcomesofALIVEistohelpJBCstudentseffectrealchange in their own spiritual lives so that they can be effective in bearing fruit in Kingdom work. The student leaders will be challenged to develop their own spiritual gifts and skills so that they can lead others to be disciples of Jesus. ThisdiscipleshipprogramwasdevelopedtofulfillInitiative Nine of the College's five-year strategic plan. As part of JBC's ongoing evaluation of student spiritual growth and learning, we had determined that students would benefit from such a program. It is anticipated that a greater focus on discipleship will help students connect better to each other, to the College, and, most importantly, to Christ. Last year, Gianni Bruno ('05) developed the discipleship program, recruited student leaders, and conducted leadership training. Gianni and Stephany ('05), with their daughter Anyssa, have returned to Italy as missionaries, where Stephany's parents, Jim and Caranita Wolseiffer ('75), have served for more than 30 years. 4 Blue & White ACADEMICS Dr. Rick Beam Academic Dean Go and Make Disciples JBC's theme for the 2006-2007 school year This theme corresponds with the new ALIVE discipleship program which begins this year. The ALIVE program has as its goal "Changing Lives One at a Time by Forming Disciples." The theme, Go and Make Disciples, comes from the passage we commonly call the great commission (Matthew 28:18-20). Though missionaries call it the "great go mission," the emphasis is actually not on coming or going, but on making disciples. Sending His disciples to, themselves, be disciple makers is the culmination of a process that Jesus started when He invited them "Come, follow me . . . and I will make you fishers of men." (Matthew 4:19). It is a process that Paul recommended to Timothy when he said, "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others." (2 Timothy 2:2). The definition of disciple-making is in the passage, "and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:20.) The goal then is to communicate the message of Christ. The expected outcome is the complete obedience of the disciple. On a personal level, this mentoring or disciple-making is surely what Paul had in mind when he urged in his first letter to the Corinthians, "Therefore I urge you to imitate me" (I Corinthians 4:16). From our theme text and from the related passages I have mentioned, the issues involved in disciple-making seem to be: (1) accurately communicating the truth of Scripture, (2) effectively motivating the disciple to obey Scripture, and (3) humbly setting a worthy example. This is not only the task of the faculty/staff mentors and the upper classmen discipleship group leaders, but the responsibility of all those who identify with Jesus as Lord and Savior. Phillip E. Johnson Visits JBC for Seminar Day e Darwinian theory of evolution is not sufficient to explain human life was the message of Phillip E. Johnson to our students at the annual Seminar Day. Johnson, widely recognized as the father of the Intelligent Design Movement, is a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Chicago Law School. He was professor of criminal law at Berkeley for more than thirty years before launching his second career as writer and lecturer. Dr. Johnson is the author of several books including Darwin on Trial, and, more recently, e Wedge of Truth. He reasoned that while everyone agrees with what scientists call micro-evolution (small changes within similar species), the leap to macroevolution (large changes across species) is not justified by the evidence. His primary thrust was to argue against Darwinian evolution as bad science. He expressed optimism that some in the audience would live to see the end of its grip on the scientific community. In addition to speaking and answering questions during our seminar day, Dr. Johnson spoke in four classes and addressed our New Testament graduate students at their orientation banquet. His visit was greatly appreciated by our entire campus community. This could lower your taxes by reducing your adjusted gross income, even if you don't itemize. ˇ Would you consider making a larger gift to JBC if you could donate money from your IRA without suffering the negative tax consequences of recognizing these funds as taxable income? Please note that restrictions apply. Consult your tax advisor. Gifts must be made in 2006 or 2007. Gifts must be made directly from your IRA provider. Donations up to $100,000 qualify. Gifts for charitable gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts do not qualify.
